Zambia, Professional Driver Training Project Update, Apr. – Jun. 2009

Driver Training Zambia volunteers

April

Jon Aspden from Bibby Distribution was seconded to the project for two weeks to conduct driver training.  Jon carried out one to one intensive sessions with the newly recruited driver trainer to develop their skills, in addition to spending time with each of the other trainers individually to consolidate learning.

Jon used a mix of practical and classroom work to impart good training skills and the most effective teaching techniques for developing students.  As the intake of students to the ITCT increases, Jon’s work will help to ensure that the teaching and quality training at the centre remains solid.

June

On the 1st June Transaid and the ITCT presented a report to the Committee on Road Carnage in Zambia in Parliament.  Recommendations included advocating for the ongoing training of all traffic and law enforcement officers and examiners, implementing the standards for driver training and a quality assured level of mandatory training for all HGV and PSV drivers which were positively received.  Over the last five months the ITCT has delivered training to a number of staff from government and aid organisations including defensive driving skills courses for Save the Children, USAID, UNDP and IOM.  Companies such as National Milling and the Bank of Zambia have also sent their existing drivers (both car and truck) for assessment at ITCT.
