Zambia, Wincanton Conducts Second Health & Safety Audit at ITCT, Nov. 2009

Sue Williams conducting training session in the classroom with African trainees

Following on from the initial health and safety review of the Industrial Training Centre Trust (ITCT) carried out in November 2008, Sue Williams Regional Safety Advisor from Wincanton visited the project to conduct another review, assess progress made and make further recommendations.

In the initial Health and Safety review, the ITCT scored 48% against a UK Wincanton minimum standards audit.  Recommendations were then given to help the training centre to prioritise and create an action plan.  During the second review a year on, the ITCT scored 72% having implemented many of the original guidelines.

During her week long placement Sue also delivered a 2-day training course Essentials of Health and Safety at Work.  This was attended by 26 ITCT employees demonstrating the value and importance the ITCT is placing on health and safety in the workplace.

The objectives of the course for participants were:

•to appreciate the significant costs associated with poor health and safety management
•to understand the underlying causes of accidents, and the importance of investigation
•to recognise why people behave in unsafe ways, and what techniques can be used to help modify the behaviour of ourselves and others
•to recognise and deal with typical hazardous situations

A health and safety committee has recently been formed at the ITCT and will be able to implement Sue’s recommendations in the coming months to continue to maintain standards.
