Where we work
The majority of our work is in sub-Saharan Africa. Africa is the only continent to have grown poorer in the last 25 years. Poor healthcare, education and livelihoods opportunities, trade barriers and governance issues are all factors, and improved transport can play a part in tackling all of them.
Why we focus on Africa
Our work in basic services is predominantly focused on healthcare. Health service delivery in all countries in sub-Saharan Africa is highly dependent on transport. With little available in the way of affordable public transport, patients have to travel huge distances on inadequate roads to attend clinics. Consequently, a high proportion of critical health service delivery is outreach-based, for example child vaccination, malaria control and the delivery of antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV & AIDS. In spite of a large investment in vehicles for African service providers, over many years, health transport remains exceedingly expensive and problematic because of a lack of systematic management.
The African commercial transport sector is also in need of development, in order to improve trade and livelihoods opportunities, and to combat the escalating road related death and injury rates that burden every country in Africa.
When we will consider working elsewhere
Transaid works in partnership with local organisations to help them to achieve development goals. Although we focus on Africa, we will always consider working with partners in the rest of the developing world. If your organization needs to improve the way that it manages its transport operations in order to improve access to basic services or livelihoods opportunities, and sees building transport skills as the way to achieve this, please contact us to discuss whether we can help.
